Solar Home
One of Roger Plowman's most innovative designs is his award-winning solar home in Lenexa, Kansas. His experience helping a client design and build a home on a problematic site in Lake Quivera, Kansas inspired him to design and build his own solar home. It was the feature home of the Greater Kansas City Annual homes tour the year it was completed, and was later featured in Better Homes and Gardens Building Ideas. The contemporary design is constructed entirely of wood (except for the underlying concrete slab) and is unique for its creative use of completely modular prefabricated panels.
The solar house contains 3000 sq. ft. of living space on three levels arranged in a rectangular plan. Microclimatic conditions were carefully considered in the home site selection, and the design opens every room on the main and lower levels to light, fresh air and picturesque views.The house is designed to use use both active and passive systems to transform sunlight into free heat. A greenhouse designed as a passive solar heat collector, vents heat to the outside during summer and inside during winter. The high, open ceiling in the living room allows heat to rise naturally to the bedrooms, and open spaces throughout the home allow free circulation of air. Industrial trusses provide support without imposing on the spatial flow. First level spaces are visible from the upper level but the partial walls upstairs block the view from below. Bedrooms share the hallway's ceiling but retain privacy from their location at opposite ends of the house.
