Personal and Affordable Service![]() "I work directly with my clients and involve them in the design process." Mr. Plowman says. "I am directly involved with all aspects of my projects, from execution of contract to occupancy of the finished building, and I take responsibility for my work. I am comfortable with virtually any building type, but I especially enjoy designing custom homes."
The Williams House in Lake Quivera, Kansas presented a challenge with a wooded lot that sloped 45 ft. up from front to back. Mr. Plowman recalls, "As I walked the site for the first time with my client, I was asked if I could design a house for this site, save the trees and have a grand view of the lake from all of the living spaces. I told him it would take a very unique house, but yes, I could do it. My solution was to make the house vertical and very open inside. I began by making the garage a concrete-walled base, carefully nosed into the hill, between the trees, like a plow share, to reduce the foot print to absolute minimum dimensions. On this base I placed the main living levels, cantilevered out over the base high above the receding slope in front, so the outside walls could be very close to and literally "in" the trees." Because of it's unusual design, the house required heavily reinforced concrete walls around the garage, with a complex system of steel cantilever beams resting on it to support the overhanging upper levels. Liberal use of windows on all sides solved the client's lake view requirements. Mr. Plowman goes on to say, "The central feature of this house is the pullman kitchen, which is elevated above the greatroom and separated from it by a long island. On the great room side this island is a bar, while on the kitchen side it's a kitchen counter. This allows those in the kitchen to interact with others in the greatroom and for all to enjoy a wonderful view of the lake." ![]() |
